AUDIO ON SOUNDCLOUD

Shay (00:03)
[AT CLERK’S WINDOW] So is there anything related to those 6 failures to appear, like in writing, that I can also see?

Conversation in Background (00:10)
[CONVERSATIONS IN BACKGROUND]

Shay (00:11)
Do you know what I’m talking about?

Clerk (00:14)
Give us just a second.

Clerk (00:16)
Do you know what cases the failure to appears are in?

Shay (00:18)
So let’s see, it had something to do with 8/6/25.

Conversation in Background (00:22)
[Would they find it every time I … get drunk? They have no problem finding it then. You might wanna get you a dog.]

Shay (00:25)
Does that help?

Clerk (00:27)
Not really. We don’t really go off by date. You have to know which case.

Shay (00:29)
Well, it was mentioned today. When will you get the folder from today back?

Clerk (00:34)
When the judge is done with court.

Shay (00:37)
All right, well, I’ll just stick around then. I got nothing else to do. I’m sure y’all excited to hear that.

Clerk (01:23)
Well, I don’t— the case that was on today, I don’t have a date for 8/6/26.

Shay (01:28)
It’s ’25. Sorry, that’s typed— my scribble.

Clerk (01:31)
I don’t have a date for 8/6/25.

Shay (01:35)
Do you remember seeing anything about failure to appears, that there were 6 of them? Do you know what that’s tied to? I think they just keep mentioning it. I honestly don’t know where it came from.

Clerk (01:49)
I need a case [number] because he has so many. You have to go through every single case.

Shay (01:54)
I see. Um, they mentioned it today, so when that case file comes back, um, maybe it’s in there.

Clerk (02:01)
It has nothing to do with that case though.

Shay (02:03)
Oh,

Clerk (02:04)
he wasn’t in court on 8/6/25 for that case or anything.

Shay (02:21)
That’s all right. I’ll see if I can figure it out and come back.

Clerk (02:24)
Failures to appear might be listed on the case histories.

Shay (03:02)
Okay, I’ll look through it. And do you have a phone number for Chris Tracy? Is that his name?

Clerk (03:10)
Who?

Shay (03:12)
Uh, the public defender that’s not Duncan Varda. I think it’s Chris Tracy.

Clerk (03:16)
I don’t have that.

Shay (03:16)
[MOVES ACROSS HALL TO CONNIE’S WINDOW]

Shay (03:26)
Were you able to find Chris Tracy’s phone number?

Shay (05:33)
Okay, and is that his office, do you know, or—

Shay (05:37)
Yes, that’s his office.

Shay (05:38)
Okay, thank you.

Shay (05:39)
[GOES BACK UPSTAIRS TO COURT ROOM 201]

Judge (06:59)
You here on the Kendrick Wilson case, ma’am?

Shay (07:04)
Uh, yes.

Judge (07:05)
Okay, so I issued a warrant. He wasn’t here, but we later learned that he’s in custody, so I continued his case for December 18 at 9:30.

Shay (07:12)
All right, well, um, can he still come today? Is there any chance he can still come today? This is like the 7th time this has happened.

Judge (07:18)
Well, he’s in custody in Louisville.

Shay (07:20)
I’m aware. It’s a half-hour drive.

Judge (07:22)
Yeah, he’s not coming today.

Shay (07:24)
Okay. Um, something about— [shuffling of bodies] something about failures to appear? Ok.

Shay (07:37)
[TO OFFICER WHO ESCORTS HER OUT] Can we get the folder sent back downstairs? Do you know anything about the failures to appear that they referenced?

Officer Dunn (07:45)
I do not know. I was working at the courthouse. I don’t know about the file or the folder or anything.

Shay (07:51)
Okay, I’m trying to get— they did give me these printouts, so I’m gonna— now I have a chance to look at some things that they had hidden from us before, but, um,

Officer Dunn (08:05)
That’s about all I can tell you. He’ll have to be here whenever he just— the day you told him you’d be here, and they’ll bring him in.

Shay (08:13)
Is it an actual trial on the 18th?

Officer Dunn (08:15)
I don’t know anything about the case.

Shay (08:20)
[SEES MATTINGLY SITTING OUTSIDE COURTROOM] And I was supposed to ask your badge number as well.

Officer Mattingly (08:25)
I’m not— I’m just here for a court order. I don’t have nothing to do with it.

Shay (08:28)
I know, but Kendrick was on the phone when I got your name earlier and he just asked me to get your badge number. I was trying to—

Officer Mattingly (08:33)
I don’t have nothing to do with this court or his case.

Shay (08:35)
You’re not— are you officially not going to give me your badge number?

Officer Mattingly (08:39)
1287, but I don’t know what—

Shay (08:41)
That’s nice. I don’t know why you have to be difficult. Thank you.

Officer Mattingly (08:44)
I don’t work here anymore.

Shay (08:45)
Okay, have a good day.
